What to do when children find out Parents are Santa
Many children figure out at a very young age—often from older friends—that Santa is actually their parents. Yet even when they know the truth, the fun can come alive and that is what Christmas Unlocked is all about. Many kids were encouraged to write to Santa as they were not in areas where there were lines to talk to Santa, this being a way for parents to find out what the child wanted. I used to make my children make a list of what they wanted a few things to list or ask them.In our home, we kept it completely honest and fair. We used the exact same dollar budget per child for both Christmas and birthdays. They still had to write a list of a few things they wanted for Christmas. Our kids knew if they asked for one big, expensive gift, they would get fewer items overall. This practical truth kept things fair and stopped any favoritism. So, where did the actual character of Santa come from?
Christmas Unlocked not only provides new family memories but keeps the family involved with fun not experienced by families before. Our hope also is to shed some history light on the topic with each post, as parents should be informed yet take over the fun in a new way, by shedding light on bits of history this helps to retain the information.
Santa is actually based on a real person from history
The 4th-Century Monk: Around 280 A.D., a generous bishop named Saint Nicholas lived in modern-day Turkey. He became famous for sneaking to people's houses at night and dropping gifts on their porches or through open windows. The American Makeover: Centuries later, Dutch immigrants brought stories of Sinterklaas to America, which locals mispronounced as "Santa Claus." By the 1800s, American writers and artists took that thin, historical monk and redesigned him into the jolly, round man with a sleigh and reindeer that we see on TV today.
Loss of family excitement is what Christmas Unlocked can provide again even with older children with new hidden things to hunt for or try to figure out, this becomes a fun not experienced by people. Stay tuned for more history and fun, the season is sone upon us.
